‘Gateway to Bolton’ plans £44million tower development with 269 homes greenlighted

Planning permission for a £44million Bradshawgate development comprising 269 new homes and a 16-storey tower has been granted.

Yorkshire-based Empire Property received a unanimous approval decision to move forward with the development at a meeting of Bolton Council’s planning committee on Thursday.

It is the third major development for Empire in Bolton following the construction of Sun Alliance House on Bradshawgate and Globe Works, which is due to be completed by December 2022.

The site is bounded by Bradshawgate, Bridgeman Place, Carlton Street and Breightmet Street and used to house the Williams BMW car showroom and the Copyplan building,

The project comprises a 16-storey residential tower at the junction of Bradshawgate and Bridgeman Place, with two adjoining blocks of six and eight storeys each.

And, there will be 16 townhouses, five will be one bedroom while 11 will be two bedroom homes.

The sketches of the general plans have been published

The 253 apartments are divided into 109 one-bedroom units, 120 two-bedroom units and 24 three-bedroom houses.

The system also includes 55 parking spaces spread over two car parks and, for local residents, 300 secure bicycle parking spaces.

Commercial and retail space is also planned on the ground floor for the Bradshawgate and Bridgeman Place frontages of the development.

Earthworks are due to start in June 2023 after more detailed plans are presented to councilors later this year.

The committee learned that the design and aesthetics of the detailed project are likely to replicate in some way the textile mill buildings that once stood in the area.

Speaking of his company’s developments in Bolton, Empire Managing Director Paul Rothwell said: “This is an excellent project for Bolton and our third development supporting the council with much needed housing stock.

“The support and assistance from the Bolton board has been particularly welcomed as a number of projects that have been approved have not been developed by the developers.

“This is an important gateway site and with our continued investment we have launched the regeneration of this part of Bolton.

“Now that we have the opportunity to develop the site, we will start working on the Reserved Materials application with a view to getting it approved this year.

“We look forward to expanding the reach of downtown and creating a new community.”
